The Daily News, formerly the New York Daily News, is a morning American tabloid newspaper founded in 1919. It was the first successful daily tabloid in the United States and, at one time, had the highest circulation of any newspaper in the world. It attracted readers by sensational coverage of crime and scandal, lurid photographs, and cartoons. Its success prompted other tabloids to establish themselves in the United States.
The News emphasized political wrongdoing such as the Teapot Dome scandal, and social intrigue such as the romance between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that ultimately led to his abdication. In addition, it devoted considerable attention to photography; it was an early user of the Associated Press wirephoto service in the 1930s and built up a large staff of photographers. The News also devoted substantial space to editorializing and was influential in shaping public opinion on such issues as prohibition.
Throughout the years, it competed with its rival, The Post, in many ways, including an intense battle over circulation and advertising. The News was owned by Mortimer Zuckerman, who was known for his flamboyant style and frequent outbursts. By the mid-1990s, its circulation had declined significantly from its mid-century peak, and in 2017 it was sold to Tronc for $1.
